Dismantling, Relocating and Rebuilding 3 Automated Storage Machines

Herts Mechanical Handling Services (hmhs) recently completed a complex project for AESSEAL, a leading manufacturer of mechanical seals and long-term client. This project involved dismantling, relocating and rebuilding three automated storage machines in their Rotherham warehouse.

AESSEAL had originally purchased the automated storage machines in 2004. Hmhs was responsible for the installation at the time and has continued to provide servicing for the equipment ever since. Today AES Seals has 17 automated storage machines at their Rotherham facility alone.

For this project, 3 machines needed to be dismantled one at a time to fit through a small door in the warehouse. Every part removed from each machine had to be carefully labelled and stored for reassembly in a different location, without sourcing any new parts. The process was made more challenging as the team had to work around AESSEAL’s existing staff, ensuring minimal disruption to the ongoing production processes.

The project was also carried out under tight time constraints, with just 11 days allocated for each automated storage machine. While the first machine faced some unexpected hurdles, the hmhs team made up for the lost time on the second and third units, ultimately finishing one & a half weeks ahead of schedule, supported by an expanded team of 10 engineers, as additional hmhs staff became available due to a delayed project elsewhere. The team’s ability to adapt and resolve issues quickly contributed to the successful and timely completion of the project.

In a surprise turn of events, a Health and Safety inspection was conducted whilst the team was on-site, with the inspector commending the team for their safety practices and finding zero issues during the audit.

The client praised hmhs for their professionalism, communication and positive attitude. John, the Project Manager at AES Seals, said:

“We’ve worked closely with hmhs for over 20 years, the team are a pleasure to work with, and nothing is too much trouble. They’re always walking around with a smile on their face.”
